Origin of Biotechnology can be traced back to prehistoric times. Man began employing micro-organisms as early as 5000 B.C. However, Biotechnology got its boost in 1950's with the discovery of DNA and is now considered a multi disciplinary branch and encompasses several disciplines of basic sciences and engineering.In addition, biotechnology is considered as a tool in a larger perspective of technological options, to be applied where it is needed and where it offers the best available options for solving specific problems and contributes in sustainable development of the society.
There has been a steady increase during the last two decades in the establishment of companies developing biotechnological products in Gujarat and therefore the manpower requirement by these companies is on the rise. At the same time in 1990s, due to limited number of colleges, students from Gujarat used to go to nearby Maharashtra and Karnataka states to study Biotechnology course. To cater to the increasing demand of manpower and to retain the students from going elsewhere, Bardoli Pradesh KelavaniMandal (BPKM) came forward to start the Biotechnology program in Maliba Campus in the rural background of Bardoli Taluka of South Gujarat. With the generous financial support of philanthropic NRI Shri N.G Bhakta of Mahuva, C.G. Bhakta Institute of Biotechnology (CGBIBT)was established on 1st August 2005 with affiliation to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat.
