📜 History and Achievements of the Medical College Hospital

Established in 1835, the Medical College Hospital stands as one of India's most venerable and pioneering institutions. Its origins trace back to the 17th and early 18th centuries, a time when medical care for the general populace was severely lacking. Recognizing this, the English administration initiated the establishment of a Medical College in Bengal. The goal was to provide instruction in available modern scientific treatment and, in turn, serve society. This foundational journey began with a handful of students, and the college has since maintained its successful operation and historical prestige.

The college has produced numerous distinguished figures in the nursing profession, many of whom have also returned to join the teaching faculty.

The expansion of its nursing programs is marked by key approvals:

  • The B.Sc. Nursing course (50 students intake) received government sanction on June 29, 2005, and INC approval on July 22, 2006.

  • The M.Sc. Nursing course was approved by the government on April 25, 2008, and granted INC permission on August 9, 2008.

  • The Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing course (50 students intake) was permitted by the government on July 24, 2009, with INC approval following on July 24, 2010.

Academically, the college boasts an outstanding record, consistently achieving a 100% success rate in examinations. Furthermore, its commitment to research is evident, with at least 30 research projects successfully completed annually. A testament to its academic excellence, both M.Sc. and Basic B.Sc. Nursing students from this college have earned the prestigious Gold Medal for achieving the highest ranking across all nursing colleges affiliated with the university in West Bengal.
