About Faculty of Ayurveda Institute of Medical Sciences Banaras Hindu University Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
The Faculty of Ayurveda is a constituent faculty under the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It traces its origins to 1922, when Ayurveda was taught under the Department of Ayurveda in the Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology. Over time it expanded, becoming the College of Ayurveda (1927), later Postgraduate Institute of Indian Medicine (1963), and ultimately, the modern Faculty of Ayurveda, established in 1971.
It offers full‑range Ayurvedic programs: undergraduate (BAMS), postgraduate (MD/MS Ayurveda), and doctoral/research degrees. It is recognized by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), and being part of BHU gives it the advantage of strong academic infrastructure, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a rich heritage.
Clinical training is supported by its Ayurvedic hospital facilities, Ayurvedic pharmacy, a herbal garden, and an Aushadhalaya (pharmacy) that produces medicines for training and public supply. The hospital attached provides hands‑on exposure in various Ayurvedic specialties (Panchakarma, Shalya, Shalakya, Kaya Chikitsa etc.) for students.
The campus offers students good facilities including hostels (for both sexes), classrooms, well‑equipped labs, botanical gardens, raw drug museum, library, and other amenities. The Faculty benefits from being part of BHU’s larger ecosystem with access to resources, other faculties (science, humanities etc.), research collaborations, and exposure to a diverse student body.
