Ayurveda is a system of traditional Indian medicine with roots in the Vedic tradition as an "auxiliary knowledge" or upaveda. Its origins are also mentioned in the Atharvaveda, which contains numerous hymns and incantations for curing illnesses. According to some legends, the practice was received from the god Brahma by Lord Dhanvantari. Ayurvedic treatments involve the use of herbal and mineral supplements (rasa shastra), surgical methods, and therapeutic oil massages.
