About Goa Medical College Bambolim, Goa
Goa Medical College (GMC), Panaji, is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical institutions in India. Originally founded in 1842 as Escola Médico‑Cirúrgica da Goa during Portuguese rule, it was renamed Goa Medical College in 1963 after Goa’s liberation.
The college is a government institution affiliated with Goa University since 1986 (earlier under Bombay University) and is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
GMC is located in Bambolim, Tiswadi, North Goa, where its sprawling campus (hospital + academic buildings + hostels) supports both teaching and patient care. The associated hospital complex—Goa Medical College & Hospital—has over 1,500 beds, super‑specialty facilities, emergency care, ICUs, and numerous specialty departments.
Academically, it offers undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD/MS), diploma, and super‑speciality (DM/M.Ch) courses across many medical disciplines.
GMC also plays a major role in community health, running rural and urban health centres such as those in Mandur (Old Goa), St. Cruz, and other affiliated hospitals like the TB & Chest Disease Hospital in St. Inez and the Institute of Psychiatry & Human Behaviour. These provide students with substantial clinical exposure.
