Government Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital, Nagercoil, located in Chidambara Nagar, Kottar, in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district, is the only government-run Ayurvedic medical college in the state. Established in 2006, the college is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, and recognized by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM). It offers the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) course with an annual intake of 60 students, combining classical Ayurvedic education with modern medical sciences. The course duration is 5.5 years, including a one-year mandatory internship. The college is attached to a 100-bedded teaching hospital that handles over 300 outpatients daily and provides treatment through various Ayurvedic specialties such as Panchakarma, Kayachikitsa, Shalya Tantra, and more. With well-equipped classrooms, laboratories, a herbal garden, and hostel facilities, the college aims to provide quality Ayurvedic education and clinical training. Despite facing challenges like faculty shortages in recent years, it remains a key center for Ayurvedic education in Tamil Nadu, especially for students seeking government-funded Ayurvedic medical training.
