About Govt. College of Nursing, I.D. & B.G. Hospital Campus Kolkata, West Bengal

🏛️ Affiliations and Origins

The College maintains affiliations with the West Bengal Nursing Council (WBNC) for its nursing programs and the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) for its Graduate courses.

The foundational Infectious Diseases and Beliaghata General Hospital traces its origins back to 1957, established under the inspiration of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Initially, the institute focused on the treatment of acute infectious diseases, such as smallpox, diphtheria, and cholera. Over time, it underwent expansion into new facilities, creating separate wards for the Infectious Diseases component and the Beliaghata General Hospital. This evolution culminated in its recognition as a teaching institution in 1990.

🎓 Academic Expansion

The nursing college initially commenced its educational journey with an annual intake of 50 students for the 2-year Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing Course, catering to nurses holding a G.N.M. Diploma. The College is expanding its academic offerings this year, increasing the Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing intake to 60 students per annum and introducing two new nursing programs: a 2-year M.Sc. Nursing course and a 4-year B.Sc. Nursing course. To date, the institution has proudly produced 220 Nursing Graduates, contributing to enhancing the quality of nursing services across the state.

🏥 Clinical and Research Facilities

The hospital has consistently enhanced its clinical infrastructure, notably establishing a 10-bedded Critical Care unit and a Dialysis Unit (operating under a PPP - Public-Private Partnership Mode) starting in 2014. It is also supported by a functional Department of Laboratory Medicine.

Furthermore, the campus hosts the second campus of the National Institute of Cholera & Enteric Diseases (NICED), a constituent body of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), since 2006. This ICMR unit includes a microbiology laboratory with a virology unit and provides essential assistance with etiological diagnoses.
