H.H. Dr. Swami Rama was a figure of great intellect and compassion, embodying the roles of a Yogi, philosopher, scientist, and humanitarian. His early development was shaped by mentorship from intellectual giants like Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Aurobindo, and Rabindranath Tagore. He pursued advanced studies in India and at Oxford, later working as a medical consultant in London and conducting pioneering parapsychological research in Moscow.
Under the guidance of his master, Bengali Baba, Swami Rama dedicated his life to bridging the gap between scientific understanding and spiritual wisdom. His global mission led him to establish several significant institutions dedicated to both spiritual evolution and holistic health. In 1966, he founded Sadhana Mandir in Rishikesh to advance the practice of Raja Yoga and holistic wellness. Expanding this vision, he established the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy in the United States in 1971, where his pioneering research demonstrated the mind's powerful influence over the body.
His remarkable yogic abilities and scientific demonstrations garnered international attention and were documented in prestigious publications, including the 1973 Encyclopedia Britannica Yearbook of Science and various Time-Life and World Book Science Annuals. His work significantly influenced the fields of holistic medicine and biofeedback therapy.
In 1989, he founded the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) in Dehradun with the express purpose of transforming the region's healthcare and education sectors.
Swami Rama's enduring mission was the service of humanity, driven by the guiding philosophy: “Deho devalayaḥ proktaḥ jīvo devaḥ sanātanaḥ” (The body is a temple, and the consciousness is the eternal divine). This profound vision shaped his extensive contributions to health, education, and rural development, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire generations.
