Indira Gandhi Medical College & Hospital (IGMC Shimla), established in 1966 (initially as Himachal Pradesh Medical College), is a premier government medical college in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. It was renamed “Indira Gandhi Medical College” in 1984. Affiliated with Atal Medical & Research University, IGMC offers undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD/MS) and diploma medical courses across many specialities. The college has a large teaching hospital, modern diagnostic facilities (including MRI, CT scan, open and closed heart surgery, dialysis etc.), specialized departments in cancer treatment (Radiotherapy & Oncology—it's a recognised Regional Cancer Centre), and facilities for women & children through the Kamla Nehru State Hospital block. Hostels for both male and female students, lecture theatres, labs, a well‑stocked library, and related amenities support the academic environment. Because of its location in Shimla, the campus combines academic rigor with a scenic, cooler climate. Though part of an older infrastructure, it is frequently upgraded.
