About Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh

The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak has been established by an Act of the Parliament of India. It came into existence through the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act, 2007, and became operational with the joining of the first Vice-Chancellor, Prof. C.D. Singh, on 8 July 2008. The jurisdiction of the University extends to the whole country, and it is fully funded by the Central Government through the University Grant Commission. The University caters to the tribals’ long-cherished dream of higher education.

Amarkantak (NLK Amarakaṇṭaka) is a pilgrim town and a Nagar Panchayat in Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh, India. The Amarkantak region is a unique natural heritage area. It is the meeting point of the Vindhya and the Satpura Ranges, with the Maikal Hills being the fulcrum. This is where the Narmada River, the Son River and Johilla River (tributary of Son) originate.

15th-century Indian mystic and poet Kabir is said to have meditated in Amarkantak, and the place is now known as Kabir Chabutra.
