Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Porompat, Imphal-East (JNIMS) was started as a project of the Government of Manipur to facilitate increase patient care services and to increase the number of Doctors for better health care facility.
The Institute was permitted to admit 100 MBBS students from academic session 2010- 11 vide letter MCI. No. 3(41)/2010-Med/907 dated 17.7.2010. Again, it was recognized as a full-fledged Medical College vide Notification No. U.12012/1224/2015-ME(P.II) issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India dated 17″ April 2015. Further, the Government of India has granted a Letter of Permission (LOP) to start Post-Graduate courses in 20 different subjects.
In 2022 the Institute was permitted to admit 150 MBBS students.
Governor of Manipur vide order no. MED-506/23/2023-HS-HEALTH dated 1st December 2023 has issued an order to take over the Institute as Government Medical College under the State Health Department.
Aim & Objectives
To provide advanced and specialized medical facilities of the highest level in all the specialties and to serve as a regional referral service centre for comprehensive health care and provide management consultancy in preventive, promotive, diagnostic, curative and rehabilitative services for the entire State of Manipur.
To provide undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and training in all identified fields of specialization at post-graduate level.
To provide and impart practical, and job oriented training including refresher courses in various specialties to medical and para-medical personnel sponsored by the state.
To address all aspects of primary health care programmes including health manpower development in the state and to provide consultation, advice and /or assist the state, government in regard to planning, establishing, managing and assessing the health and family welfare and medical education programmes and other related activities.
To assist the State Government in coordinating health planning and developmental activities especially in the organization of primary health care and health manpower development for the State.
To encourage, guide and assist the training and making available adequate number of required categories of skilled manpower at primary, secondary, and higher levels of health care.
To develop educational training facilities of the highest order for various types of para-professional, supportive and auxiliary staff at all levels.
To conduct research, especially in operational, applied and other studies as related to health sciences and manpower development.
To hold examinations and grant such degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions and titles as may be laid down in accordance with the regulations.
To frame regulation specifying the manner in which the welfare of all grades of employees are addressed in order to bring a healthy and harmonic work culture in the Institute for the betterment of the healthcare of the society.
To do all such other lawful acts as are conducive or incidental to the attainment of the above objectives.
