Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi is a premier government medical institute located in Bariatu, Ranchi, Jharkhand. It was originally established in 1960 as Rajendra Medical College and Hospital, and the teaching hospital component came up in 1965. In 2002 it was formally upgraded as an autonomous institute under the state legislature.
RIMS has a very large campus, with a multi‑specialty hospital spanning over 2,000+ beds offering diverse clinical departments like Emergency, Pathology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Oncology, Cardiology, Urology, Radiology, among others. It also houses a dental college (started around 2017), nursing & paramedical courses, as well as postgraduate (MD/MS), super‑specialty (DM/MCh), and PhD programmes. The institute is known for providing free medical services (with essential medicines) to many patients.
On the academic side, RIMS admits students to its MBBS course via NEET‑UG, with around 180 seats per year under current norms. The infrastructure includes modern lecture halls, laboratories, a well‑equipped diagnostic setup, a 14‑bed trauma centre, oncology block, advanced diagnostic tools, etc. Overall, RIMS Ranchi is a major medical education, healthcare, and research hub in eastern India, particularly for Jharkhand and neighbouring regions.
