Sher‑i‑Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), located in Soura, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, is a premier medical institution of the region that serves as a super‑specialty hospital, research centre, and deemed university. Established with construction beginning in 1976 and partial commissioning in December 1982, SKIMS was granted the status of a deemed university by an Act of Legislature on 19 August 1983. Its mandate is to provide super‑specialty tertiary healthcare, postgraduate and postdoctoral medical education, clinical research, and to strengthen the linkage between primary, secondary, and tertiary health systems across the state. The institute encompasses several component units such as a large multi‑specialty hospital, State Cancer Institute, Maternity Hospital, Nursing and Paramedical Colleges, plus an affiliated medical college at Bemina.
