Sikkim Professional University earlier named as Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University was established in the year 2008 by SPU (Act No.11 of 2008) of Sikkim State Assembly. It has been renamed as Sikkim Professional University videits Amendment Act, 2020 (Act No. 09 of 2020).
