Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Matri Bhavan, located in Dakshineswar, Kolkata, has been offering dedicated service to economically backward women and children for 74 years, inspired by Swami Vivekananda's guiding principle: "Service to Man is Service to God."
Established in 1950 by the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur, with only 10 beds, the hospital's management was transferred in November 1961 to the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, the women's wing of the Order. Since then, it has operated entirely under the Mission's Governing Body, growing from its humble beginnings into a 100-bedded charitable hospital. This includes 80 beds for Obstetrics, Gynaecology, General Medicine, General Surgery, and Paediatrics, with a specialized 20-bed unit for Neonates.
The institution sustains its operations and charitable initiatives primarily through donated funds. Significantly, INFOSYS FOUNDATION has been a major contributor to running the daily charitable hospital services and community programs since the fiscal year 2021-2022.
The Mission's philanthropic activities extend across several key areas:
Hospital Services: Providing highly subsidized, modern medical care including Obstetric Care, Gynaecology, Laparoscopic Surgery, Level-III Neonatology Intensive Care, and various other specialties. Free services and further concessions are provided based on need.
Educational Services: Contributing to women's empowerment through programs like B.Sc. Nursing and Paramedical Training, aiming to foster a society where women can access opportunities and live with dignity.
Skill & Livelihood Development: Conducting training programs to provide marginalized girls with economic independence and a dignified livelihood.
Community Welfare: Operating numerous activities to bring healthcare directly to underprivileged families in urban and rural West Bengal who face socio-economic or accessibility barriers.
The Matri Bhavan has maintained its founding principle of "Work is Worship," serving humanity without prejudice, celebrating its Silver and Golden Jubilees in 1975 and 2000, respectively, and looking forward to its Platinum Jubilee in 2025.
