The Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama, Lucknow, a local affiliate of the globally renowned Ramakrishna Mission (Belur Math, West Bengal), began its humanitarian efforts modestly in 1914. It was founded by a group of young individuals inspired by the elevated teachings of Swami Vivekananda, India's great patriot saint. Through years of selfless dedication, these pioneers fostered the growth of the Sevashrama, gradually increasing its social and religious activities.
Initially, the organization acquired land and built its own facility at Ahata Gungey Nawab, Aminabad, Lucknow, thanks to the generosity of local benefactors and devotees. By 1925, its activities had expanded further, leading to its affiliation with the Ramakrishna Mission, the religious and philanthropic body established by Swami Vivekananda. This Mission is registered under the Societies Act.
Following India's independence, the existing premises in Aminabad became insufficient to handle the growing public demand for services, particularly for the Mission's dispensary. Consequently, in 1961-62, the Sevashrama secured a plot of land in the Trans-Gomti Area with support from the State Government. This new site was intended for the establishment of the Vivekananda Polyclinic, allowing for expanded medical, health, educational, religious, and cultural services.
The Polyclinic was conceived as an ambitious medical center offering modern diagnostic facilities, primarily serving outpatients and providing extensive domiciliary medical services. The Aminabad center relocated to the new site, Vivekananda Puram, in January 1967. The substantial Polyclinic building was completed with government funding and widespread cooperation, officially opening for public service on 18th February 1970. By June 1970, twelve fully equipped Outpatient Departments were operational.
